“My relatives, friends and neighbours now see me as a working woman, somebody associated with money (omukazi wa sente) and many are envious. They (other women) can’t buy themselves anything but me I can. When I was a shabby market vendor nobody even noticed me”.

“He did not like my success, especially the physical address which I never used to have, and above all my interaction with male clients. All the assurances that these were merely business interactions fell on deaf ears. One day he found me with a list of taxi driver’s phone numbers, which I would use to alert them about the movements of traffic police for a fee, and he adamantly insisted that those were my lovers. He labeled me a prostitute and would batter me at home without any provocation. I started hating him, but resolved to continue with my business”.

Grace Bantebya Kyomuhendo is the lead Reearcher. She is an Associate Professor and Head of Deprtment of Womena and Gender Studies Makerere University

Consolata Kabonesa is the Co Research and is a lecturer in the department of Women and Gender studies Makerere University. She holds a Doctorate in Women and development.
